Used Car Purchase Checklist: The Test Drive

One of the most important parts of buying a used car is the test drive. In this stage you get to be behind the wheel of your prospective vehicle for the first time, so right there, you get a sense of how comfortable the car feels being in the driver’s seat. While you’re in the car, there are a few things you should look out for:
Pre-Test Inspection
The first thing to do before your test drive is to give it some preliminary inspections to make sure that the car is in good working order. This includes checking the oil and fluid levels, tire pressure, engine condition, and fuel, among others. Know when to walk away from a deal when an overpowering odor assaults your senses the moment you open the hood.
Take Notes
Bring a notepad with you so you can jot down any possible problem as you drive. Take your time and note the noise, movements or anything else that you think doesn’t feel right. Check up on them again before finalizing the deal. Don’t be pressured into a short drive test.
Tune Out
Turn off the radio unless it’s the very thing you’re testing. Don’t let anything distract you from your search of trouble spots. Sometimes you’ll only realize that something’s out of place when you’ve already bought the vehicle, even though you actually noticed some signs during your test, but were too distracted to care.
